Hugh Jackman OUT, Who Should Host the Oscars This Year Instead?

Those of you anxiously awaiting for Hugh Jackman to commit to another Oscar ceremony should probably line up for Broadway tickets, because you won’t be seeing him on the Oscar stage this year. Sources say Jackman has declined the job over the past few weeks, and while he won’t rule out hosting future ceremonies, he didn’t want to do it two years in a row.

Jackman certainly breathed new life into a ceremony that was getting more stale by the year—he showed enthusiasm andSource: SlashFilm RSS Feed

The last few week shave seen several large product recalls with the most recent from Belkin due to a risk of electrical shock. Today Sony has announced a large product recall that will affect the owners of several VAIO computers. The recall has to do with the AC adapters the machines use rather than the batteries this time around.

With Droid, Motorola Has Nowhere to Go But Up

Motorola’s free-fall in the mobile phone space it once dominated continued in the most recent quarter: The company’s wireless revenues fell 46 percent to $1.7 billion during the period as its market share eroded to a mere 4.7 percent. And while Motorola managed to surprise investors by turning a $12 million profit, the plunging handset sales were just the latest in the stumble in the company’s slide toward irrelevance.

The life of the mind

Saturday dawned damp and overcast, as if November had arrived early. The wind had begun to strip the trees, carpeting the footpath with leaves. It seemed like a day for hunkering down with the newspapers and a good book. But then I remembered that it’s Cambridge’s annual ‘Festival of Ideas’ (the Humanities’ counterpart to the Science Festival of which I’m a Patron). The philosopher Hugh Mellor was billed to give a talk on Frank Ramsey in the University Library at 11am. So I got upSource: Memex 1.1 RSS Feed

The iPod turns eight years old

Do you remember where you were on October 23, 2001? I don’t, but I do remember that Apple make a very big announcement, which—at the time—I thought was a big mistake: the iPod.

Today marks the eighth year of the iPod’s existence and these days I find it hard to image a time when the iPod wasn’t a part of the cultural zeitgeist.

The first iPod had 10 hours of battery life, a FireWire port (which I still miss), and 5GB of storage for $399. Oh, and it was Mac-compatible Source: iPhone News Updated RSS Feed

Vuzix Wrap 310 video eyewear ships out to virtual big-screen lovers

Vuzix’s $249.95 Wrap 310 is probably the least hideous / heinous of the video eyewear options on the market today, and while it’s still take a few bottles of Jack to get us to rock these with a smile, those who are just high on life can now make a set their own. In case you’re forgotten, these things provide a virtual 55-inch screen in front of your eyes, and there’s support for iPod / iPhone connections as well as basic sources such as DVD players and the like. Acer's 3D notebook Aspire 5738DG gets the official nod

Dear Apple: How About an Official “Magic Mouse” App for the iPhone and iPod touch

Dear Apple: yesterday, as part of your huge pre-holiday product launch, you announced a new iPhone-inspired multi-touch Magic Mouse with gestures.

It looks nice. It might even (finally!) be a decent mouse. But TiPb’s left to wonder — for those of us who already have iPhones and iPod touches, wouldn’t it be even nicer to have an official “Magic Mouse” app?

Windows Mobile 7 — More Brand Dilution Coming

I have been harsh in the past at the Windows Mobile lack of a specific brand. I’ve detailed why that is – the many partners of Microsoft that want their specific phone to be unique. I’ve heard some say that Windows Mobile 7 would usher in a new era of a consistent user interface and rescue WinMo from “more of the same.” Istartedsomething just pointed out something that dashes what little hope I had for Windows Mobile 7.

Google’s Experimental Homepage Fades To A Single Word

We all know that Google is a big fan of minimalism, especially when it comes to its famous homepage, where it tries to keep its ‘word count‘ down to 28 words (actually, it looks like it might be up to around 30). Tonight, Google is apparently experimenting with taking that concept to a whole new level: the site is bucket testing a new effect that hides everything on the Google homepage aside from the search box and Google’s logo, only revealing the rest of the navigationSource: TechCrunch.com RSS Feed

Chevy Caprice Police Car: Once You Go Black... [Police Cars]

We revealed the new Chevy Caprice police car late last night to bravos for the car, but lukewarm reaction to styling. GM's responded with shots of the Corvette-powered, RWD Aussie-built law enforcement-only Chevy Caprice police car wearing its dress blacks.

The one issue we had with the new Caprice was that it looked rather pedestrian — especially when compared to the menacing front end of a Dodge Charger. Well, in black, the Caprice actually looks pretty damn mean-looking. Take aSource: Jalopnik RSS Feed
